Injury Prevention for Ski Bums

Sprout Skier

Hitting the Pow-Pow this weekend? Here are some easy lessons to help prevent an injury while skiing or riding in this season’s fluffy powder.

Lesson #1: Protect your Noggin!
Get a good helmet that fits and wear it on the slopes. Wearing a helmet can save your life. Period.

Lesson #2: Check Em’!
Well-functioning bindings go a long way to preventing knee injuries. Make sure yours are working well and properly set for your body and ability. Knee injuries are very common in skiers or riders. The knee is the most common body part injured during the ski season. Injuries range from ligament tears to fractures requiring surgery. Many knee injuries occur when bindings did not release during a wipeout. Therefore, have your bindings regularly serviced prior to each ski season and throughout the season.

Lesson #3: Green, Blue or Black?
Ski within your ability. Many injuries occur when novice skiers or riders simply catch an edge, hit a rough spot or lose control. Therefore, always assess the terrain (which frequently changes) and determine if it matches your ability. Remember your friends would rather meet you for après in the lodge than at the ER.

Lesson #4: Ski Bum Wannabe or One Run Wonder?
Whether you are a weekend warrior or only hit the slopes once a year, many injuries can occur from lack of physical conditioning and fatigue. Therefore, before you get to the lodge, start an exercise program, hit your gym or visit your local physical therapist to rehab any injuries. Ensuring your body is strong and flexible can prevent many minor or significant injuries. Injuries also occur late in the ski day when fatigue is high. So stop and rest frequently throughout the day, especially if you are out of shape.
